1. Who is Engels? How does he describe Manchester? Was this description typical of industrialized aresa in Britain? What conditions existed that workers would have wanted changed?

2. What trade unions developed over time in Britain? What major legislation was passed as a result of these unions? What major events in history did these unions play a role in?

3. What legislation did the British government pass? What reforms did this create? Why do you think the government began to legislate working conditions?

4. What political movements grew out of the call for reform in industrialized Britain? Were they popular? Why or why not?
